rfc-ignorant-org-ignorant.org

Aprīlis 12, 2010

there are 3 tons of mail servers out there and my experience shows that that close to 50% of then are not configured properly, as result, spam industry flourishes. Because it is not possible to set up checks that, if every single mail server should have been set, could be set and large  amounts of spam just dropped due to incompatibility.

And results are, there appear even more and more mail servers that are configured improperly, that have wrong settings set etc. And all that, just because almighty RFCs are written mostly as suggestions, even if they are not, they are and people just tend to ignore them. Sorry not people, but RFC-ignorant administrators. And there is very neat page that checks for RFC compliance of those domains. Now there is a hitch – if administrator is ignoring RFC why can’t he ignore rfc-ignorant.org listings too? And they are.

So, if someone who have almighty powers of mail server configuration – read RFC, how your server should be configured, to what you have to reply, and what and where you have to set up. There is endless list of requirements, that all can be done and should be done.

The result will be reduction of spam, since MTAs could be set to strictly comply with RFC, and spammers just wont be able to send out spam e-mails.

well.. just a thought.
